About Fort Rock

Fort Rock is a stunning circular volcanic formation that erupted from a long-vanished inland sea, leaving behind sheer, fortress-like walls that rise nearly 200 feet above the flat desert. It's one of the most striking geologic landmarks in Oregon.

Nearby Fort Rock Cave yielded sandals woven from sagebrush bark and radiocarbon-dated to over 10,000 years โ€” among the oldest footwear ever discovered. Don't miss the restored pioneer homestead village in the town of Fort Rock.

๐ŸŒŒ Dark Sky Tip

You're inside the world's largest Dark Sky Sanctuary. Pack a red flashlight, give your eyes 20 minutes to adjust, and plan around a new moon for the best view of the Milky Way.
