Northwest Lake County
About Winter Rim
Winter Rim is a massive fault escarpment that climbs more than 3,000 feet above the floor of Summer Lake. Named by explorer John C. Frémont during a brutal 1843 winter expedition, the rim offers some of the most dramatic vistas in the state.
Drive or hike to the overlooks for a panorama that stretches for miles across the basin and beyond — a perfect spot to catch the sunset before the Dark Sky takes over.
🌌 Dark Sky Tip
You're inside the world's largest Dark Sky Sanctuary. Pack a red flashlight, give your eyes 20 minutes to adjust, and plan around a new moon for the best view of the Milky Way.
